Incremental vs full backups and keeping track of versions.

There is no provision for selecting whether the backup is to be full, incremental or whatever. If you are going to schedule regular backups to a hard drive you might want the first backup to be a full backup with incremental backups over the next N events. This means the software will need to look at the directory and figure out which version to name a file - backup_full.tar, backup_inc-01.tar, etc.

Of course it would be nice for the restore function to be able to figure this out, but that isn't nearly as necessary as creating the backups to begin with.

Right now the use of this feature requires the sysadmin to manually rename an existing file in order for the software to be able to create a new backup - since the use of wildcards doesn't seem to work.

I don't know whether implementation would be as simple as expanding the GUI options or whether an intermediary piece of software would need to be created, but it sure would be a nice addition to the toolkit!

Do you have variable substitution enabled in Filesystem Backup module configuration? - Arent (talk) 07:23, 2 June 2015 (EDT)
